Room3 Special Exhibition: Early Modern Period through the lens of "Objects" "The Spread of the Suikoden Boom

Nishikie, picture books, kyoka, and freak shows ・ ・ ・
A glimpse of the spread of the Suikoden boom in popular culture in the late Edo period !.

The Chinese novel "Suikoden" was introduced in the early Edo period (1603-1867) and was of interest to Chinese scholars. The number of readers gradually expanded with the publication of the first editions of "Santō Kyōdōn" (The Tale of Santō Kyōdō), which was set in Japan. The number of readers gradually expanded, with the publication of "Chushingin Suikoden" by Santo Kyoden, "Kyokutei Bakin's Suikoden", and "Nanso Satomi Hakkenden", which were set in Japan. This boom in Suikoden at the popular level spilled over into the world of ukiyoe, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi's "通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個 ( 壱人 ) \ \1}", a series of brocade prints that appeared at the end of Bunsei ( 1818 ~ 30 ) (通ぞくすいこでんごうけつゃくはちにんのひと) play a major role in the popularity of the samurai painting genre.
In addition, "Suikoden" was not only used as a subject in various other fields, such as kyoka and fairs, but its image was also superimposed on kodan and ukiyoe, which depicted chivalrous men and exponents in the late Edo period. In this way, "Suikoden" became a rich source of inspiration for the popular culture of the late Edo period. In addition to Kwanzan's translation of "Tongsoku Chugi Suikoden," this exhibition will display prints by ukiyoe artists such as Katsushika Hokusai that deal with "Suikoden," nishikie by Kuniyoshi and others that depict the great characters of "Suikoden," and works that spilled over into the "kyokaikumonotsu" genre at the end of the Edo period, providing a glimpse into the spread of the Suikoden boom in popular culture at the end of the Edo period. This exhibition offers a glimpse of the spread of the Suikoden boom in popular culture at the end of the Edo period.
